Femocracy 2

Documentary | DE (2024) | 104min

The film is a lively group portrait of East German women from the most diverse areas of the GDR. What they all have in common is that they grew up in the GDR and were shaped by it and do not see this origin as “ballast”, but rather base their self-image and identity on it. The film explores and describes the real state of women’s equality in a country that claimed to have solved this issue once and for all, even in sharp contrast to West Germany. Female musicians, writers, LPG chairwomen, workers, painters, politicians and scientists have their say. They all report on the hardships of the plain, their everyday lives, their struggle for recognition in a repressive state that persecuted, reprimanded and imprisoned its opponents.

These are moving stories from real-life socialist everyday life that show how hard it was to fight for happiness, self-realization, dreams and individual paths in life beyond the dictates of the state. These women take “sensitive paths” and do not duck away when men of power and bureaucratic apparatchiks want to set their course. “Femocracy” listens to its female protagonists, making itself and its images permeable to unique life paths beyond prescribed lifestyles. In this way, the film also makes it understandable why the West German gaze was so often so unreceptive and prejudiced, so self-assured. “Femocracy” invites viewers to make up their own minds about life in the GDR, without fixed judgmental templates.
