Synopsis:
Giang is 17, in 11th grade at a Berlin grammer school and
wondering which road to take next. When her mother Thu was that age, her
Vietnamese parents sent her to work in East Germany. Thu’s plan was to
return to Vietnam as soon as possible and become a famous poet and
singer. But things turned out differently. She stayed in Germany and
worked very hard running her own flower shop with the help of her
daughter.
Giang doesn’t really feel at home anywhere. She knows very little
about her family in Vietnam - she was a child when she last visited
them. So she decides to have another look at her roots. Together with
her best friends Anne and Carl she visits her mother's home country. Her
grandmother, whom she hasn’t seen in eight years, welcomes her with a
song: "Somebody who never thinks of their homeland will never be a good
person". As it turns out, her grandmother also once dreamed of becoming a
poet and a singer. Now she has big plans for her granddaughter's
future: "Your dreams shall fly far! We have fought for you children. Why
don't you become a singer?"
